Hi fellow speaker builders!

Hope you wont mind me posting in English here. I can translate as my girlfriend is Dutch but thought it might be ok in English too :)

I had the chance to grab these very nice Philips full range drivers this week (mine are AD1050/M7) There is very little information about these on the web. Very similar model also 10 inch full range is the AD4000M which came in the late 1960s before the AD1050.

I thought it would be good to ask here if anyone has experience with Philips 10 inch full range drivers?

I would like to check if anyone has found a good box solution which works well? I prefer something that is not too big and not very difficult to build. I have found BR "Monitor" plans for AD9710 and AD12100; Monitor 8 and Monitor 12. I thought it would be possible to go in the middle of these for a Monitor 10. But not certain if BR will work well for this unit.

Here are T/S Parameters for the AD 4000M (AD 1050/M7):

Thanks for warm welcome!

Aat jou Zuidafrikaans is ok! Ik kan Nederlands ook beetje lezen :hide:

bas focal, did you try anything with your 12 inchers apart from closed box? I wonder about these "Monitor" designs from Philips. As picture. Have seen these for the AD9710/M and for the AD12100/M.

I think 100 litre size is ok though if I go for sealed enclosure.. I just want to give this driver a chance to shine!

looking at the TSP, a closed box with big series capacitor (820µF) might be a good option, still would be a big box (170 liters for Qb=1.0, which would give nice 18dB slope in combination with the cap) .. maybe combination of variovent and series cap can keep the volume lower?

or go for big and put it in a TL

bas focal this looks good and is convenient size! How does it sound in your opinion?

I presume this is made to this plan Philips Basreflexkast B2 ? Except you have port on underside. If you enjoy the sound I think this can be a nice one for me to try. :proost:

Otherwise henkjan I suppose something like 80 -100 litre and experimenting with aperiodic is also option.
The large sealed box is going to be too big for my space.

I Had a whole lot of those driver types, 12 pieces AD12100/M4 - M8 and 4 pieces AD12202//M8 and they are great sounding indeed, the only downside for me personally was the quite small sweetspot of these driver types because of the bundling effect.
Working with those driver however brought me on the "philips road "and I ended up building a large three-way consisting of the AD12201/W8 as woofer, the AD5060/SQ8 for the midrange and the AD162/T8 tweeter. The sound is extremely good, nothing less in comparison with the full-range systems but without the sweet spot.
If you don't mind the sweetspot you can have a lot of satisfaction from the full-range systems, they are a lot easier to build also in comparison with a three-way system.

Hey Olaf, I would love to hear your 3 way system! Maybe I will arrive at this point one day on my journey..

For now I will enjoy discovering the Philips sound with this old pair from 1970, and will have to live with the tight sweet spot of course. I am very interested how these drivers will compare to my Fostex FF165. It looks like my best chance of success is starting with a 160 - 170 litre sealed enclosure. I will construct from baltic birch and add some bracing.

I heard for some time about the Philips FR drivers and when I saw these 10" for a good price I was ready to jump. I must say compared to some 1970's Tannoy or Goodmans I was quite surprised at how lightweight the pressed basket appears on the Philips, some ringing if you flick with a finger etc but I am excited to try these out.

that can be solved by adding some "bitumen" (the stuf you would use in car hifi to dampen a door) to the basket
